Dan R. Kirkendall, 71, Decatur, died at 2:40 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2013, in his residence. He was born March 10, 1941, in Indianapolis. He married Carolyn R. Ontrop on July 8, 1978, in Portland.
He served his country in the United States Army from 1963 to 1965. He was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church in Monroeville, where he was a former eucharist minister.
He was a graduate of Western High School in Russiaville and a graduate of Purdue University with a bachelor’s degree in agriculture and a master’s in education. He retired in January 2004 as a teacher with the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend with 20 years of service.
Surviving are his wife, Carolyn R. Kirkendall, Decatur; daughter, Sarah R. Kirkendall, Kalamazoo, Mich.; sister, Marcia L. (George) Penry, Greenfield; and brother, Greg Duncan, Sharpsville.
Preceded in death by a brother, James Snyder.
A prayer service will be 9:30 a.m. Saturday in Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home, Jacobs Chapel, Monroeville, followed by a 10 a.m. Saturday Mass of Christian burial at St. Rose Catholic Church, with Fr. Joseph D’Souza officiating. Burial will be in St. Rose Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday in Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home, Jacobs Chapel, Monroeville. A rosary service will be 7:30 p.m. Friday in the funeral home.
