Omer Roberts

Oct. 16, 1932 - April 21, 2013

Omer Roberts 80, Bourbonnais, Ill., passed away at 1:20 p.m. Sunday, April 21, 2013, at Riverside Medical Facility in Kankakee, Ill. Omer was born Oct. 16, 1932, in Kokomo to the late Oliver and Nellie Roberts (Manship). His marriage to the former Betty Ann Fleenor was in Rhode Island. They had been married for 62 years.

Omer was in the U.S. Navy for 23 years and was chief petty officer. He entered the service with his brother, George. Omer served during the Vietnam War and the Cuban crisis. He was a manager of Venture and Belscott Stores, worked at American Spring and Wire for 20 years and St. George Elementary School for three years.

He loved to travel and vacation. He enjoyed camping, fishing and was very devoted to his family, especially Cody, TJ, and Cheyenne. He enjoyed going to reunions. He watched his grandsons play football and was quite the jokester. Christmas was his favorite time of year. He was very close with his mother. In the earlier years, he had a dog named Tuffy that was everything to him. Wherever Omer went Tuffy went also.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Betty Ann Roberts; daughters, Cathy E. Goldsberry (Billy), Kelly Maitland (Tommy) and Terisa Neuhous (Bob); a brother, Loren Roberts; grandchildren, Brian Neuhous, Devlin Neuhous, Greg Neuhous, Lacy Neuhous, Cody Omer, T.J. Maitland and Cheyenne Maitland; and eight great-grandchildren.

Omer was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Rodney Omer Roberts; seven brothers; nine sisters; and two grandchildren, Candy Elaine Goldsberry and Randa Lynn Goldsberry.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Ellers Mortuary Main Street Chapel, 725 S. Main St. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, also at the mortuary, with Pastor Larry Zehring officiating. Burial will be in Galveston Cemetery with full military honors provided by the U.S. Navy and the Kokomo Military Rites team.
