Irene Alvarez, 62, Kokomo, passed away at 3:20 p.m. Thursday April 25, 2013, at St. Joseph Hospital. She was born Dec. 12, 1950, in El Paso, Texas, to Jose and Mercedes (Molinar) Padilla. On May 15, 1983, she was married to Roberto Alvarez, who survives.
Irene was a 1970 graduate of Father Yermo High School, graduating with top 10 honors. She went on to work for the Mendelson Clinic as a medical assistant. She later went to work for Delphi Electronics in Kokomo, retiring after 22 years of service. After retirement, Irene worked at Pier 1 in Kokomo.
Irene loved to travel, dance and host parties for friends and family.
She is survived by her husband, Roberto; mother, Mercedes; children, Sandra Smeltzer, Cecilia Steward, Leticia Alvarez, Rackel Davis and Adam Alvarez; grandchildren, Cameron Steward, Sartavia Morland, Daniel Steward, Andrew Steward, Damian Alvarez, Isaiah Davis, Miles Davis and Henry Estep; and eight sisters.
She was preceded in death by her father.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at noon Monday at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 1229 N. Washington St., with the Revs. Joshua Bennett and Mike McKinney the celebrants. Friends may visit with the family from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Shirley & Stout Funeral Homes & Crematory, Lincoln Road Chapel, 1315 W. Lincoln Road, where the Rosary will be recited at 4:30 p.m.
