M. “Joe” Burthay, 67, died at 1:45 p.m. Thursday, April 25, 2013, at Bayfront Medical Center, St. Petersburg, Fla. He was born March 25, 1946, in Morehouse, Mo., the son of Merle E. and Lillian (Acord) Burthay. On Aug. 2, 1980, in Indianapolis, he married Debbie Strong, who survives.
Joe was a 1964 graduate of Kokomo High School. He worked at General Motors for 35 years, retiring in 1998. He was a tow motor driver and committeeman, zone committeeman and quality network representative for many years. Joe loved riding his Harley, NASCAR and Sprint Car racing, and old cars. He and Debbie loved their winters in Florida and riding the Harley with friends.
Joe is survived by his wife; children, Joe Burthay, Greg (Stephanie) Burthay, Michael (Amanda) Burthay; four brothers, Bill (Marcia) Burthay, Rick Burthay, Wayne (Darcy) Burthay and Bobby (Lisa) Burthay; two sisters, Carolyn Shuck and Janice Burthay; eight grandchildren, Brian, Caitlin, Tyler, McKenzie, Addisyn, Jegen, Keegan and Aubrey; two great-grandchildren, Abrielle and Caden; aunt and uncle, Ellen and Bill Hinton; stepmother, JoAnn Burthay; mother-in-law, Edna Strong; brother-in-law, Jim Kelley; many nieces, nephews and extended family; best friends, Butch and Marilyn Mills, in Florida.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Pat Burthay; father-in-law, Howard Strong; sister-in-law, Milly Kelley.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Shirley & Stout Funeral Home & Crematory, Lincoln Road Chapel, 1315 W. Lincoln Road, with Pastor Lynn Coleman officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens. Friends may call at the funeral home from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday.
