R.E. ‘Gene’ Waddell

March 9, 1922 - May 15, 2013

R.E. “Gene”Waddell, 91, Russiaville, passed away at 9:35 a.m. Wednesday, May 15, 2013, at his home. Gene was born March 9, 1922, in Russiaville to Harry E. And Ersie (Lindley) Waddell. On Nov. 23, 1940, he married Betty Johnson at Lynn Friends Church and she passed on June 21, 2004.

Gene was a 1940 Russiaville High School graduate. He was co-owner and operated Waddells Grocery store for 50 years. Gene was a member of the Russiaville United Methodist Church, Russiaville, Masonic Lodge; former Russiaville American Legion Floyd Marshall Post; member of the Russiaville cemetery board; member of the Kokomo Elks Lodge; was a board of directors member for Central National Bank; and a member of Green Acres Club for years. He loved to play golf, watch Purdue basketball and beat his buddies in gin. He loved his pet dogs. Gene also served as a second lieutenant in the Air Force as a pilot.

Survivors include daughter, Diana J. (Terry) Guyer, Kokomo; son, Phil E. (Jane) Waddell, Tipton; four grandchildren, Tennis A. Guyer, Kokomo, Torrey (Julie) Guyer, Kokomo, Monica (Jay) Rich, Tipton, and Matt

(Kari) Waddell, Carmel; 11 great-grandchildren, Madison Guyer, Tanner Guyer, Ashton Guyer, Amelia Guyer, Connor Rich, Courtney Rich, Taylor Waddell, Brian Waddell, Emily Waddell, Jack Helms and Grace Helms; one sister, Jeanette Johnson, Mansfield, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Ersie Waddell; wife, Betty Waddell; and brothers, Jack (Jeanne) Waddell and Earl (Helen) Waddell.

A private funeral service will be Monday, with the Rev. Ron Mann officiating. Friends are invited to a committal service at 11 a.m. Monday at Russiaville Cemetery with military rites by VFW Post 1152. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Stout & Son Funeral Home, 200 E. Main St., Russiaville.

Memorial donations may be given to Russiaville United Methodist Church or Russiaville Youth Little League Program. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Stout & Son Funeral Home. Online condolences may be left at www.stoutandson.com.
