CARMEL — Richard Dale Schwartz, 79, Carmel, died Aug. 24, 2006. He was born Aug. 29, 1926, to the late James G. and Orpha B. (Lewis) Schwartz.
Mr. Schwartz served in the Army during World War II. Dick was a 1944 graduate of Kokomo High School and 1956 graduate of Purdue University, where he received his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering.
He worked as a civil engineer for the state of Indiana Highway Department for more than 35 years, before his retirement in 1991. He was a member of John Purdue Club, Harbour Trees Golf Club, the Moose Lodge, the Sahara Grotto, where he was President of the Greeters Association, the American Legion, and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church. Dick was an avid supporter of all Purdue University Athletics. He was appointed a Sagamore of the Wabash, in 1991, by Gov. Evan Bayh.
Richard is survived by his wife of 15 years, Anne (Lieske) Schwartz; sons, Thomas and wife, Doreen and Allen and wife, Pat Schwartz; daughter, Susan and husband, James Smith; brother, William Schwartz; sister, Helen Conwell; four stepchildren; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife and mother of his children, Pauline Schwartz, four sisters, and one brother.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Flanner & Buchanan Funeral Center, Carmel. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Funeral Center, where friends may call one hour prior to the time of service.
