Clarence G. ‘Jim’ Shipley

Clarence G. “Jim” Shipley, 67, Kokomo, died at 2:35 a.m. Thursday, May 1, 2008, at St. Joseph Hospital. He was born Sept. 8, 1940, in Greeneville, Tenn., the son of Taylor and Estella (Roberts) Shipley. On Nov. 4, 1966, at Beamer United Methodist Church, he married Nancy E. Johnson, who survives.

Jim was a 1958 graduate of Camp Creek High School. He worked at Chrysler Transmission Plant, retiring June 1, 2007, after 37 years of service. He was a member of UAW Local 685. He started coaching in 1975 at Northwest Little League, having coached the Indians, Tigers and Babe Ruth Chiefs. He also helped coach flag football and basketball. He collected baseball cards and was an avid IU, Bobby Knight, Notre Dame and NASCAR fan.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy, Kokomo; one daughter, Dee Thompson and her husband, John, South Bend; one son, Tim Shipley and his wife, Timi, Kokomo; five grandchildren, Danielle Lawson, Casey Shipley, Cody Shipley, Eli Grimes and Chase McGowan; two sisters, Fay Gunter and Ruth Knipp, both of Greeneville, Tenn.; one brother, Cecil Shipley, Greeneville, Tenn.; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Alfred and Jean Johnson, Kokomo; brother-in-laws and sisters-in-laws, Robert and Priscilla Brown, Robert and Sue Moss, and Larry and Diana Blades; several nieces and nephews; and his dog, Mindy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and three sisters.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Shirley & Stout Funeral Home, Lincoln Road Chapel, 1315 W. Lincoln Road, with Pastor Don McDowell officiating. Entombment will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions in memory of Jim Shipley may be made to one of your local Little League baseball organizations.
