James P. Schurig, 65, Kokomo, passed away Dec. 9, 2013, at Community Howard Regional Health. He was born Oct. 1, 1948, to Julius and Frances (McCulloch) Schurig in St. Louis, Mo. James met Nilene Thomas in a Christian folk singing group called the Seekers. They were married Jan. 26, 1974, in St. Louis, Mo.
Jim was a lifelong United Methodist and a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church. He retired in 2007 from Chrysler after 35 years of service. He was a member of UAW Local 685. He enjoyed singing and sang in Kokomo Symphony Chorus, and had been active in the St. Louis Metro Singers, and Opera Theatre in St. Louis. Jim will be remembered for always having a mischievous glint in his eyes, a joke on his tongue, a song in his throat and a laugh in his belly.
Jim is survived by his wife, Nilene Schurig, Kokomo; daughter, Amie (Scott) Pratt, Westfield; son, Michael Schurig, Kokomo; two grandchildren, Reese Pratt, Landon Pratt; mother-in-law, Katherine Thomas, Kokomo; sister, Frances Hunter, St. Louis, Mo.; nieces, Joan Avery, Debra Hunter, St. Louis, Mo.; nephews, Paul (Erin) Hunter, Mark (Lana) Hunter, St. Louis, Mo.; several great-nieces and nephews.
James was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Judy Fias.
Jim’s family offers thanks to the staff of Fresenius dialysis for their friendship and special care.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Shiloh United Methodist Church, 5741 W. 100 N., Kokomo, with Pastor Zach Washler officiating. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Shiloh United Methodist Church.
