Larry G ‘Chappy’ Chapel

April 7, 1945 - April 21, 2013

Larry G “Chappy” Chapel, 68, Kokomo, passed away at 7:50 a.m. Sunday, April 21, 2013, at Community Howard Regional Health. Born April 7, 1945 in Howard County, Larry Gene was the treasured son of Fawns Guy and Wilodene Weitzel Chapel.

His preteen years were spent in Howard County, and at age 10, his family moved to Rochester. In 1963 as a proud Zebra, he graduated from Rochester High School. During high school, Larry played on the baseball team and on the gridiron, he played fullback.

On April 6, 1968, in Rochester, Larry Gene married the love of his life, Gloria Ann Holloway, who later became his best friend. Together they shared 45 years of life’s adventures. Their union produced a beautiful daughter, Susan.

In 2001, “Chappy” as he was known by his Chrysler buddies, retired after 38 years of dedicated service from the Kokomo Chrysler Transmission Plant as a material handler. He was a also a member of the UAW 685.

An avid bowler, “Chappy” sported a sizzling 188 average. He enjoyed letting the good times roll at the Cedar Crest Lanes, now known as the Kokomo Sports Bowl, as a member of the Chrysler League and the Senior League. Taking to the links was another favorite form of relaxation.

Together Larry and Gloria would board his shiny Suzuki and catch the warm summer breeze while cruising the streets around the city or taking a day trip to enjoy the sights. He loved playing cards with his cronies in Galveston and Kokomo. More recently, he became an accomplished computer gamer, playing “Call of Duty” or Texas hold ‘em. Larry was the proud owner of a unique Garfield collection. He also owned a vast collection of Coke memorabilia.

Larry is lovingly remembered by his wife, Gloria Ann, Kokomo; his daughter, Susan Meissnest and husband Kurt, Kokomo; his mother, Wilodene “Willie” Eltzeroth, Kokomo; his father-in-law, Bob Holloway, Rochester; and his feline companion, big fat cat “Ho,” a long-haired domestic.

Preceding him in death were his father, Fawns Guy Chapel in 1955; along with several aunts and uncles.

A celebration of the life of Mr. Larry G. “Chappy” Chapel will be held later this spring. Arrangements are entrusted with the Good Family Funeral Home, Rochester. Friends may leave messages of condolence or light a candle to honor his memory at www.goodfamilyfh.com.
