Barbara ‘Bobbi’ Ann and George ‘Pete’ William Schmitt

Barbara - Jan. 30, 1925 - April 11, 2013, George - Jan. 27, 1924 - April 13, 2013

— Barbara “Bobbi” Ann Schmitt, 88, Seminole, Fla., passed away at 3:15 a.m. Thursday April 11, 2013, at Hospice House Woodside, Pinellas, Fla. She was born Jan. 30, 1925, in Shelbyville, to the late Pearl and Dorothy (Fort) Lykins.

George “Pete” William Schmitt, 89, Seminole, Fla., passed away at 12:15 a.m. Saturday, April 13, 2013, at Hospice House Woodside, Pinellas, Fla. He was born Jan. 27, 1924, in Kokomo to the late George Aloysius and Frances Edith (Terwische) Schmitt.

George and Barbara met in high school and dated seven years before their marriage Feb. 15, 1948, at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Kokomo.

Barbara was a 1943 graduate of Kokomo High School and a 1946 graduate of Good Samaritan School of Nursing, where she graduated as a registered nurse. Barbara worked at St. Joseph Hospital for 10 years and for Drs. Wachob, Moore and Doss for 22 years.

She was a Good Samaritan alumni and a charter member of Lakeside Izaak Walton League.

George was a 1942 graduate of Kokomo High School. After high school he went on to serve his country with the Army in the South Pacific during World War II. During that time, he served under Gen. George Patton and with the Army anti-aircraft division.

After the war, he served 35 years with Indiana Bell Telephone Co. George was also an Izaak Walton League state president for four years, local chapter president and a national representative. He later served seven years on the board of Edgewater Pines Mobile Home Park, where he made his last home.

George and Barbara were members of St. Joan of Arc and St. Patrick Catholic Churches.

They are survived by Barbara’s sister, Janet Mutran; nieces and nephews, Sandra Ann (Richard) Warner, Theresa Dawn Clark, Tamara Shepherd, Terri Mutran, Pam (Mike) Maloney, Robert (Carol) Schmitt, David (Debra) Schmitt, Luann (Paul) King, James (Marta) Schmitt, Mary Jo Schmitt, Chiquita (Steve) Meyers, Gregory (Angie) Clark, Robert (Olga) Clark, Ronald (Dianna) Schmitt, Norman (Patricia) Schmitt and Deborah (Roger) Massey; great-nieces and great-nephews, John (Stephanie) Brittain, Michael (Barbara) Brittain, Meghan Smith, Neil Smith, Michelle Lawless, Patrick Lawless, Saav Lawless, Tiffany Hamblin, Robert Maloney, Shala (John) Glentzer, Brent Schmitt, Melissa (Thomas) Halter, Ryan (Kayla) Schmitt, Mark (Leslie) King, Camela (Mark) Houston, Dena (Jeff) Linn, Donna (Kelley) Moss, Monica Bogue, Erica (James) Campbell, Stephanie (Daniel) Kelly, Stacey (Eric) Degraffenreid, Tiffany Massey, Adam (Megan) Massey, Steph (Chris) Bluto and Heath (Elizabeth) Meyers; great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews, Drake Brittain, Christina Brittain, Jackson Brittain,  Jaidyn Ogle, Kingston Howell, Austin Hamblin, Michael Hill, Lyndsey Maloney, Caitlin Maloney, Brian Maloney, Jenna Glentzer, Jakson Glentzer, Jacob Glentzer, Levi Schmitt, Dakota Schmitt, Myah Halter, Nora Schmitt, Kennedy King, Corbin King, Calib Wilson, Luciana Bluto, Victoria Bluto, Quintin Meyers, Alex Hinkle, Jerimiah Clark, Nathaniel Clark, Max Clark, Hanna (Travis) Bline, Brandon (Heidi) Clark and Adam Clark; and great-great-great-nieces and great-great-great-nephews, Zeign Hill, Brody Hill, Adryan Maloney, Abby Clark and Maverick Clark.

They were preceded in death by their parents; George’s brothers, Russell (Georgia) Schmitt, Wilbert (Lucille) Schmitt and Robert Leeroy Schmitt; George’s sisters, Dorothy Ann (Virgil) Rust and Mildred (Robert) Clark; and a nephew, Ted Thomas Mutran.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 3155 S. 200 West, with the Rev. Theodore Dudzinski the celebrant. Burial will follow in Sunset Memory Garden Cemetery, where military rites will be performed for George by the U.S. Army and the Kokomo VFW Military Rites Team. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until time of the Mass.  

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice. Shirley & Stout Funeral Home & Crematory is assisting the family with arrangements. Messages of condolence may be left online at www.shirleyandstout.com.
