Ralph Eugene “Gene” Wingate, 76, Kokomo, passed away Tuesday, April 30, 2013, in Georgia. He was born Feb. 22, 1937 in Wabash. On Oct. 17, 1959, he married Alice A. Ontko at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marblehead, Ohio, and she survives him.
Gene was a 1956 graduate of Kokomo High School and went on to serve his country in the U.S. Army. He served his community as a member of the Kokomo Police Department for 20 years, retiring in 1989. His memberships included St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Fraternal Order of Police and Moose Lodge, Anna Maria Island, Fla. He was a wonderful husband and father who loved traveling to Florida, Notre Dame, word puzzles and playing cards.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Alice; sons, Kerry Wingate and Steve Wingate; daughters, Beth (Terry) Bland and Judy (Mike) Eckert; grandchildren; one brother-in-law; five sisters-in-law; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Betty Wingate Hendrix; grandparents; aunts; uncles; cousins; and mother-in-law, Mary.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joan of Arc Church, 3155 S. 200 W. Kokomo, with Father Tony Rowland officiating. Military honors will be performed by the Kokomo V.F.W. Military Rites Team and the U.S. Army. Friends may visit with the family from 4 to 8 p.m. on Monday at Shirley & Stout Funeral Home, 1315 W. Lincoln Road, Kokomo, where the Rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m.
