Elsie Ellen Carpenter, 90, Kokomo, passed away at 10:40 a.m. Monday, Oct. 8, 2012, at North Woods Village. She was born April 7, 1922, in Mattoon, Ill., to Aove Mattox and Goldie Pearl (Sparling) Mattox. On April 18, 1936, in Kokomo, she married Lester “Pappy” W. Carpenter, who preceded her in death Aug. 9, 1994.
She retired From Syndicate Sales. She was a lifelong member of The Salvation Army in Kokomo, Golden Ages of the Salvation Army, Euchre Club, and VFW Post 1152 Ladies Auxiliary.
Survivors include a son, Ed and wife Marty Carpenter, Kokomo; son, Jim Carpenter, Kokomo; son, Tom Carpenter, Kokomo; son, Bill and wife Rosie Carpenter, El Paso, Texas; daughter, Debby Willis, Kokomo; daughter, Donna and husband Ray Shields, Kokomo; daughter-in-law, Billie Sue Carpenter, Kokomo; sister, Marie Carpenter, Kokomo; brother, Aove “Max” and wife Cathy Mattox, Alabama; brother, Butch and wife Betty Cessna, Kokomo; brother, Ed Cessna, California; sister, Roberta and husband Braden Lawson, Kokomo; 19 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, and 12 great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Lester C. Carpenter; a daughter, Shannon Sue Carpenter; two grandchildren, Tammy Willis and Tracy Carpenter; and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Ellers Mortuary Main Street Chapel, 725 S. Main St., with Logan Sparling, and Capt. Dale L. Brandenburg officiating. Burial will follow in Crown Point Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the mortuary.
