---- — Winifred Mae Kitchell, Kokomo, died peacefully at Waterford Health Campus Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2014. Winifred was born Aug. 4, 1922, in Kokomo to Peter and Matilda Moser. On April 14, 1940, she married William Kitchell at the Lincoln Methodist Church in Cass County. They were married 66 years before William died in 2007.

The youngest of eight children, Winifred attended St. Patrick’s School and Kokomo High School. After her marriage, she worked in the nursery at St. Joseph’s Hospital and later at Jefferson Road Animal Hospital, from where she retired in 1984.

Winifred spent her early years of marriage raising her children while her husband was overseas during World War II. A strong-willed woman who was the heart and soul of the Kitchell family, Winifred always worked outside the home while also assisting her husband with his business, Kokomo Monument Sales, from 1955 until 2003. She had an extraordinary love for her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and they were always a top priority in her life. Regardless of the size of the home, she always found room for the family dog. She passed that love of animals along to her children.

She enjoyed traveling in the United States and abroad. She and her husband were season ticket holders for Kokomo High School sports for over 50 years and they were longtime season ticket holders at Indiana University football games. Following their retirement, the couple enjoyed wintering in Fort Myers, Fla. A devout Christian, Winifred attended South Side Christian Church for 45 years. She was able to live at home until her 90th birthday and lived her final 18 months at Waterford, where she received much appreciated respect and compassion from the staff, including special care from Jill Wilson and Stephanie Heinke and the staff from Serenity Hospice.

Survivors include sons, Dr. Richard and wife LouAnn Kitchell, Blowing Rock, N.C., William Jr. and his wife Anita Kitchell, Greenwood, and David and his wife Linda, Kokomo; son-in-law, Edward McClure, Indianapolis; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Jean Hunter, Logansport, and Betty Moser, Kokomo.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William; daughter, Carolyn Kitchell McClure; parents, Peter and Matilda Moser; brothers, Peter Moser, Fred Moser and Jacob Moser; and sisters, Helen Moser Horoho, Mary Moser Courts, Catherine Moser Clark and Agness Moser Hartleroad.

Services are planned for 3 p.m. Saturday at Shirley & Stout Funeral Home & Crematory, 1315 W. Lincoln Road. Viewing is scheduled from noon to 3 p.m., followed immediately by services conducted by Rev. Rebecca Sundquist. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, Winifred requested memorial donations be made to South Side Christian Church or the building fund at the Kokomo Humane Society. Online condolences may be left at www.shirleyandstout.com.
