Freda G. (Hoppe) Smith, 87, 1920 S. Bell St., Kokomo, passed away at 2:10 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 23, 2014, at Community Howard Regional Health. She was born Oct. 17, 1926, in Kokomo, to the late WM J. and Anna E. (Anthony) Hoppe. On March 27, 1946, she married Harold “Bill” Smith at Courtland Avenue Friends Church in Kokomo. She always called Bill her “Sweet William” while he always called her “Freda Babe.” They truly loved each other. Bill passed away May 4, 1994.
Freda attended Kokomo High School. She was very active in her community, always volunteering for various activities. In fact, Freda was actually called mayor of South Bell Street, helping raise many children in her neighborhood and beyond. She was known for having a beautifully, decorated home, always decorating for every holiday. She would even put a Christmas tree up in every room. This past November, Freda lost her beautiful home as a result of the tornado that struck Kokomo. She was very blessed to walk away without a single scratch.
She frequented the Breakfast House every day, as well as attending the community meal every week at First Church of the Nazarene. She also had many friends at Meijer, and Walgreens as she made many friends everywhere she went. Freda enjoyed, traveling, playing cards and scratching lottery tickets. But, she enjoyed spending time with her family the most, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Freda was known for her kindness, caretaking and being a homemaker for many.
She will be greatly missed.
Surviving are her children, Phyllis Jean (David) Lytle, Kokomo, and Robert (Janyce) Smith, Scottsdale, Ariz.; grandchildren, Stephanie (Wayne) Anderson, Eric (Bobbie Jo) Smith, Amanda (Stephen) Webb, Jonah (Helen) Busick and Aaron (Diane) Busick; great-grandchildren, Nathan Anderson, Sydney Webb, Sarah Anderson, Kristen Busick, Zackary Webb, Owen Edward Busick and Nada Kay Busick; several nieces and nephews; special family friend, Phill Peters, Kokomo; and her faithful, loving companion, Teddy bear.
