---- — Freda G. (Hoppe) Smith, 87, 1920 S. Bell St., Kokomo, passed away at 2:10 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 23, 2014, at Community Howard Regional Health. She was born Oct. 17, 1926, in Kokomo, to the late WM J. and Anna E. (Anthony) Hoppe. On March 27, 1946, she married Harold “Bill” Smith at Courtland Avenue Friends Church in Kokomo. She always called Bill her “Sweet William” while he always called her “Freda Babe.” They truly loved each other. Bill passed away May 4, 1994.

Freda attended Kokomo High School. She was very active in her community, always volunteering for various activities. In fact, Freda was actually called mayor of South Bell Street, helping raise many children in her neighborhood and beyond. She was known for having a beautifully, decorated home, always decorating for every holiday. She would even put a Christmas tree up in every room. This past November, Freda lost her beautiful home as a result of the tornado that struck Kokomo. She was very blessed to walk away without a single scratch.

She frequented the Breakfast House every day, as well as attending the community meal every week at First Church of the Nazarene. She also had many friends at Meijer, and Walgreens as she made many friends everywhere she went. Freda enjoyed, traveling, playing cards and scratching lottery tickets. But, she enjoyed spending time with her family the most, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Freda was known for her kindness, caretaking and being a homemaker for many.

She will be greatly missed.

Surviving are her children, Phyllis Jean (David) Lytle, Kokomo, and Robert (Janyce) Smith, Scottsdale, Ariz.; grandchildren, Stephanie (Wayne) Anderson, Eric (Bobbie Jo) Smith, Amanda (Stephen) Webb, Jonah (Helen) Busick and Aaron (Diane) Busick; great-grandchildren, Nathan Anderson, Sydney Webb, Sarah Anderson, Kristen Busick, Zackary Webb, Owen Edward Busick and Nada Kay Busick; several nieces and nephews; special family friend, Phill Peters, Kokomo; and her faithful, loving companion, Teddy bear.

Freda was preceded in death by her husband Bill; her parents; one grandson, Robert Anthony Smith; and 10 siblings, Ruth Hoppe, Little Johnny Hoppe, Bessie Mae Hoppe, Mabel Miller, Betty Hayes, Bertha Clark, Everett Hoppe, Kenneth Hoppe, Lizzie Clark and Helen McCrumb.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Ellers Mortuary Webster Street Chapel, 3400 S. Webster St., Kokomo, with Pastor Steve Cole officiating. Entombment will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens Mausoleum. Friends may visit with the family from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the mortuary.
