James “Sherman” Shelton, 75, Kokomo, passed away at 9:43 a.m. Friday, May 14, 2010, at Howard Regional Health System. Sherman was born March 5, 1935, in Mershons, Kentucky, to the late James E. Shelton and Martha E. (Casteel) Shelton.
He was in the U.S. Marines and the U.S. Navy, then the National Guard, with a total of 20 years in the military. Sherman loved to watch Westerns, read Louis Lamour books and was a great joke and story teller. He also enjoyed gardening and was a very adventurous person.
Survivors include the mother of his children, Kathy; sons, James “Cherokee” Shelton, Tommy Dean Shelton (Pam), Stevie Christopher Shelton, and Bobbie Dean Shelton, (Diane); daughters, Debbie E. Shelton, Antoinette A. Shelton, Jane Marie Rayls, Jean Maria “Gabby” Shelton, Lisa Ellen LaFond, Elizabeth “Libby” Shelton-Rogers (Greg), Stephanie CeCelia Babcock (Chad), Allison “Baby Girl” Kirchner (Jeff) and Kimmy Sue Shelton; a brother, Lester V. Shelton; sisters, Jean Purvis (Paul), Juanita L. Copeland (Joe) and Brenda D. Pattison; 40 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two daughters, Kathy Sue Shelton-Johnson and Patricia Clara Shelton; two brothers, Dallas W. Shelton and Carlos Dean Shelton; and a sister, Ivas Mae Shelton.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at Ellers Mortuary, Webster Street Chapel, 3400 S. Webster St. Services will also be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the mortuary. Burial will take place in Albright Cemetery. There will be military honors provided by the Kokomo Military Rites Team.
