Gene Gordon Thompson, 79, Kokomo, passed away at 8:51 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2013, at Kindred Hospital Indianapolis South. He was born Aug. 16, 1934, in Frankfort, to Faye and Mildred (Woods) Thompson. On May 30, 1969, he married Ruth Delrymple, who survives.
Gene proudly served his country as a paratrooper with the U.S. Army 11th Airborne Division from 1956 until 1958. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed history, visiting restaurants and was involved with the NRA. Most of all he loved his family and spending time with them.
In his younger years, Gene worked as a railroad apprentice in Frankfort. He went on to retire from Delco Electronics in 1994 after more than 20 years of service.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth Thompson; children, Debbie (Cottingham) McMahan, Darlene (Cottingham) Williams and husband, Greg, and son Michael Thompson; grandchildren, Rob Achor, Scott Achor, Chad McMahan, Shanna Williams, Teena Williams, Kendra Stutzman, Wendy (Ian) Hudson, and Elizabeth Otero; seven great-grandchildren; his brother, Bill Thompson and wife, Jo; and sister, Anita Pierce.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Bob Achor; a grandson, Ryan Pullen; and a sister, Mary Underhill.
A graveside service will be held at 5 p.m. Friday in South Union Cemetery on County Roads 00 North South and 1050 West in Howard County. Military rites will be provided by the U.S. Army and the Kokomo VFW Military Rites Team.
