Charles E. Gooch, 82, Kokomo, formerly of Indianapolis and Nineveh, died at 8:15 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 3, 2013, at North Woods Village. He was born in New Castle on Jan. 24, 1931, the son of John and Julia (Gourley) Gooch. He married Audrey Atkinson Aug. 9, 2008, and she survives.
Charles was a 1949 graduate of New Castle High School and went to work for Chrysler Corp. after graduation. He joined the U.S. Army in 1951 and was honorably discharged in 1953. During active duty, he served in the Korean War.
Charles retired from IndyGo (Indianapolis Public Transportation Corp.) in 2002. He had worked for PanAm in Hialeah, Fla., for nine years prior to his return to Indiana. Charles had fond memories of having lived over 20 years on Sweetwater Lake and cherished his Nineveh family and friends. He was a member of the First Church of God in Kokomo.
He is survived by his wife, Audrey; his daughter, Lugena Gooch, Pompano Beach, Fla.; son, Bradley A. Gooch and his partner, Tony Barnhart, Indianapolis; two sisters, Evelyn Rainey of Indianapolis and Phyllis Stonerock, New Castle. In addition, Charles is survived by his wife Audrey’s four children, Debbie (Richard) Pine, Cathie (Steven) Davis, all of Kokomo, Teresa (Michael) Caldwell, Crown Point, and Kevin (Kristie) Atkinson, Corning, N.Y.; and 11 stepgrandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
The family invites you to join in a celebration of Charles’ life at 3 p.m., Saturday at Shirley & Stout Funeral Home & Crematory Lincoln Road Chapel, 1315 W. Lincoln Road, with Pastor John Newton officiating. Entombment will follow at Sunset Memory Gardens Mausoleum with military honors provided by the U.S. Army and the VFW Military Rites Team. The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m.
