Live life like Brett

Today is the birthday of Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre. He’s 38. But coaches, general managers and players in the National Football League likely believe Favre’s much older.

He’s been a top-flight NFL quarterback since 1992. He’s the league’s only three-time MVP and led the Pack to two Super Bowls. Green Bay defeated the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXI and lost to the John Elway-led Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXXII.

This season, Favre again is playing at Super Bowl-level. His Packers are 4-1 and stand atop the NFC North. He’s passed Miami Dolphins legend Dan Marino for most career touchdown passes in league history. Favre owns the career pass completions mark and currently is second to Marino in career passing yards. Commentators already are discussing his legacy.

For insight into what that might be, all you have to do is watch NFL Films. Our favorite is one from the sideline. Favre is standing next to the Pack’s former offensive coordinator Andy Reed, who now coaches the Philadelphia Eagles.

Favre (and we’re paraphrasing here): “What do you think Mike [Holmgren, former Packers coach] would say if he knew I’m dippin’?”

Reed (disgusted): “Are you dipping?”

Favre: “Hey, this ain’t the Ice Capades.”

Say what you want about Brett Favre, but the guy has fun, loves what he’s doing and, today, at 38 years old, is inspiring his teammates to play their best and be their best.

Favre’s legacy won’t be about touchdowns, wins or MVP trophies. When Favre walks away from the game, his legacy will be his passion for football and life.

And with it, there will be a lesson for us all. Love your family with all your heart. Love what you do. Live life to its fullest.

That’s the way God intended it to be.

Happy birthday, Brett. And please don’t retire any time soon.
