Cheers & Jeers - Tuesday, July 15, 2008

Kids show compassion

Here’s a Cheer for the students, parents and employees of Western High School. They organized and participated in a relay fundraiser for senior Adrienne Larrison and raised more than $7,000.

Adrienne spent two months in a diabetic coma. Her family had no health insurance.

But because she turned 18 a week before falling ill, she is legally responsible for her medical bills. Those are more than $50,000.

More than 400 students participated in the relay. Western’s compassion and respect for Adrienne reminds us that many families are raising kind, caring kids.

Just retire already

This is a Jeer for the position in which retired NFL quarterback Brett Favre has put his former team, the Green Bay Packers.

Favre played 16 seasons with the Pack. He won three league MVP awards and a Super Bowl.

For years now, he’s contemplated retirement. In March, he made it official. Now he wants his old job back. The organization said he could rejoin the squad in a “different role.”

That means as backup to quarterback Aaron Rogers. And now Packers fans from Rhinelander to Kenosha are angry with the team.

We just wish more of the league’s top players would retire at the top of their game, as Denver quarterback John Elway did – a local hero.

Nice shootin’, Ben-Marvin

Another Cheer for Northwestern High School golfer Ben-Marvin Egel. He won an Indiana Golf Foundation Masters event at Coyote Crossing Golf Club in West Lafayette.

The sophomore shot a 3-under 69 for the title – and on a windy course he’d never played before last week.

In June, it looked as though Ben-Marvin’s father would be transferred to North Carolina over the summer. It now appears Ben-Marvin will continue to study and play at Northwestern.

You can bet the Tigers’ coach is happy his young state finalist could be returning for another successful season.
