Cheers & jeers - Saturday, Sept. 19, 2009

Hayes Brothers donates $1,334

Kelly Karickhoff, executive director of the Howard County Historical Society, sends this Cheer:

“I just reviewed an invoice for Larry Hayes, owner of Hayes Brothers and a Kokomo businessman who has helped the Historical Society with maintenance and upkeep on the Seiberling Mansion for more than 20 years.

“This summer, Hayes Brothers repaired the slate roof on the Seiberling Mansion and Seiberling Carriage House. The repairs were more extensive than they had originally thought. However, they went ahead and repaired all the problem spots and only charged the Historical Society what they had originally bid.

“They donated $1,334 in labor and materials.

“The Howard County Historical Society appreciates Hayes Brothers and their continued support and dedication to helping preserve our historic buildings. We trust their expertise and depend on their guidance and direction in determining what is best for our facilities. Their professionalism and generosity is an asset to our community.”

Enjoy the stolen clothes

Jody Absher of Kokomo sends this Jeer:

“A little over two weeks ago, my daughter and I were having a yard sale on Webster Street. We left the things out overnight, as we were continuing the sale the following day.

“Someone came during the night and took a whole rack of my daughter’s clothes – these were not all cheap clothes.

“The thing that really gripes me, though, is this: My daughter is a single mother of a 5-month-old baby. She hasn’t been able to find a job and didn’t even have a car. The father of her baby has not been paying support and will not even buy diapers for the baby. She was selling her things to have money for herself and her baby.

“If you needed the clothes that bad, you could have asked. My daughter is so kind-hearted, she wouldn’t let you go without. Enjoy them, while she has to worry about how to support her baby.”

Funeral home shows kindness

Ralph Shackelford of Kokomo sends this Cheer for a local funeral home:

“The parents (Stephen and Erica Goshern) and grandparents (Ralph and Susan Shackelford) of our special angel Gabriel Goshern wish to send this heartfelt thank you to Sunset Memory Gardens Funeral Home for the extraordinary care given in our loss.

“We want to give a special thank you to Tony Woods, funeral director, and his kind, caring and generous staff: Staci Mullett, Katie Childers, Jim Guthrie and Melissa Hutchins.

“When you lose a baby, your grief is overwhelming. So again, thank you. I highly recommend their services for anyone that needs them.”

‘Great time was had by all’

David Emry sends this Cheer to the Haworth High School Class of 1984:

“On Aug. 29, the Haworth High School Class of 1984 held its 25-year reunion at Pastarrific’s Casa Bella banquet room. Chef Cynthia and her fantastic staff prepared for a wonderful evening with great food and atmosphere.

“In addition to a nice evening out, the Class of 1984 wanted to promote the idea of giving back to the community where we grew up! Before dinner, the class recognized and thanked our classmates, the spouses and children of our classmates who have served or are currently serving in our armed forces. We also had a moment of silence to remember eight members of our class who are deceased.

“Throughout the evening, the Class of 1984 held two consecutive silent auctions. Mrs. Harry McCool donated several personal items and collectibles of Mr. McCool’s to benefit the Harry McCool Scholarship Fund. This silent auction raised $144 for Mr. McCool’s scholarship.

“Additionally, several classmates donated items for the second silent auction which benefited the Kokomo Rescue Mission. We raised $280 in the second silent auction to benefit the Kokomo Rescue Mission.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Chef Cynthia Yazdani and her great staff for preparing a great evening for us to enjoy. I’d like to thank Karen Baker, Keith Dinn, Steve Gieselman, Dana Nakanishi, Nick Pate and Kim Sanburn for helping to find and contact classmates. And last but most importantly, I’d like to thank the class committee for six months of effort, planning this 25-year reunion: Marla Grove Beatty, Ann Rowe Bradshaw, Ted Julian, Kimberly Anglin Morris and Laura Wylie. And a big thank you to all of the classmates who participated in this event. It seems like a great time was had by all!”

‘Two wonderful physicians’

Eugene Williams of Conway, Mass., sends this Cheer:

“On the first anniversary of the death of our mother, Katie Williams, we would like to take the opportunity to thank two outstanding Kokomo area doctors.

“We want to express deep gratitude to Dr. Joseph Westrom for his many years of excellent, personalized care as her primary physician. Dr. Joe took the time to know Katie and always related to her as a person first.

“We would also like to thank Dr. Drayton Logan and the staff at St. Joseph’s Cancer Unit for their dedicated and compassionate care during the final year of Katie’s life.

“Both Dr. Westrom and Dr. Logan always took the time to carefully explain and listen. Kokomo is so fortunate to have these two wonderful physicians in their medical community.”
