Forum to go on as planned

It was just two weeks ago that Rep. Joe Donnelly’s campaign announced the congressman would debate challenger Luke Puckett twice before the Nov. 4 election.

Donnelly, a Democrat who represents Kokomo, will debate Puckett, a Republican, in a studio at WNDU-TV in South Bend Oct. 25. A station anchor will moderate. Representatives of WNDU, the St. Joseph County League of Women Voters and Indiana University South Bend will ask questions of the candidates.

The next debate will be held at Rochester High School Oct. 29. Sponsored by the Rochester Sentinel, it will be moderated by a high school student.

We hope the 2nd District congressman attends the debate The Kokomo Perspective, WIOU-AM and we proposed for Indiana University Kokomo. Puckett said he’ll be at Kresge Auditorium at 6 p.m. Oct. 22. So will we.

Four years ago, when Donnelly first challenged incumbent Republican Chris Chocola, the two met at IU Kokomo. As we previously mentioned, Donnelly spokesman Jonathan Differly told us, “It’s going to be a great opportunity to get an impartial and substantial understanding of where the candidates stand on the issues.”

Kokomo voters deserve that opportunity.

We sincerely hope Donnelly changes his mind and participates in the Oct. 22 debate. With or without him, Puckett has said he will answer our questions.

LOCAL DEBATES:

• 6 p.m. today: Central Middle School, 303 E. Superior St., candidates for state House District 30 and District 38.

• 6 p.m. Oct. 22: IU Kokomo’s Kresge Auditorium, 2300 S. Washington St., 2nd District candidates for U.S. House of Representatives.
