---- — Host families needed in Howard County

Last month, a group of students and volunteers with Youth For Understanding spent the day in Indianapolis visiting our capital city. The students were given a ride around the 500-mile race track, enjoyed a tour of the Statehouse and ended with a night watching the Indianapolis Indians play baseball. The students really enjoyed getting to know more about their second home.

For the last 30 years, Howard County has opened its homes to international exchange students from around the world. Almost 250 students are proud to call Howard County their second home. The schools in Howard County are looking for additional students for the coming school year. They have discovered everything the students have to offer the schools, the families and the community.

I receive messages all the time from former students, telling me how much they miss this area of the world. We think of this as just a small town with not much to do. To the students, this is their second home. Through their eyes they see our community as a caring, loving place they were lucky enough to call home for a year.

Youth For Understanding is looking for families in all of Howard County to consider opening their homes and their hearts to an exchange student between the ages of 15 and 18. They will arrive in August with full medical insurance, spending money and the hopes for a wonderful year with their new family and community.

The family has to agree to provide the student with a bed of their own, three meals a day and lots of love and support. Families come in many forms, including families with children, childless couples, empty nesters, retirees and single-person households.

‘You will alwaysbe in our hearts’

We would like to take the time to say thank you to everyone in the Kokomo area, especially to the community of Greentown, for all of your support over the past four years. It was our pleasure to represent our school, our community and, most importantly, our friends and family.

The last four years were a blast, and it is sad to see it end. But we are excited to take our talents to Bloomington. We hope to have an impact on others at Indiana University and are extremely grateful for the opportunities ahead of us.

This all could not have been possible without the support and generosity that we have received from each and every one of you. Although we are Bloomington bound, we will never forget where we came from and the support we have received.

You have helped us create memories we will never forget. Thank you so much for all that you have done for us! You will always be in our hearts!
