Street racers arrested on Markland

Two men, allegedly involved in a street race on Saturday night, were arrested after a sheriff deputy clocked them going 93 miles per hour in the eastbound lanes of Markland Avenue.

Deputy Jordan Buckley was westbound on Markland Avenue near Plate Street when he noted two vehicles accelerating at high rates of speed. Buckley initially clocked the vehicles on radar at 80 mph. The vehicles continued to accelerate to 93 mph.

Buckley turned on the racers, and was able to stop a red 2002 Dodge Stratus south of the intersection of Cooper Street and Markland Avenue. The vehicle was driven by Troy E. Ward Jr., 21, Russiaville.

Kokomo Police Officer Ryan Shuey located the second vehicle involved, a 1999 white Pontiac Grand Prix, driven by Wesley M. Burkett, 22, Sharpsville, parked about a block away from the scene of Buckley’s traffic stop.

Ward faces charges of reckless driving, engaging in a speed contest, and 93 mph in a 35 mph zone. Burkett faces charges of reckless driving, engaging in speed contest, 93 mph in a 35 mph zone, and an additional charge of resisting law enforcement.
