Two injured in one-car crash

Two men suffered minor injuries after their vehicle crashed into a utility pole early Wednesday morning when the vehicle swerved to miss a deer on 750 West.

Travis R. Smith, 21, and Stewart A. Matlock, 21, were transported by ambulance to St. Joseph Hospital for treatment.

Smith complained of back and shoulder pain and Matlock suffered a possible concussion and complained of back pain, Howard County Sheriff Marty Talbert reported.

Smith was driving southbound on 750 West just north of Ind. 22 shortly after 5 a.m. when a deer ran out in the roadway. Smith swerved to miss the animal and lost control of his vehicle.

His Saturn four door collided with a utility pole, shearing it in two, Talbert reported. The vehicle then rolled over after impact coming to rest on its roof.

Deputy Justin Markley said the use of seat belts by both occupants prevented serious injuries.

Deputies were assisted at the scene by paramedics from St. Joseph Hospital, as well as firefighters and rescue personnel from the Burlington Volunteer Fire Department. Howard County Emergency Management officers stood by while crews from Duke Energy replaced the utility pole.

Tuesday, 12:10 p.m., deputies arrested Amanda Shafer, 25, 3900 block of Alameda Boulevard, at the Howard County jail, on a warrant for petition to revoke a suspended sentence.

Tuesday, 7:46 p.m., police arrested two 15-year-old males at Wal-Mart, 1920 E. Markland Ave., each on a charge of conversion.

Saturday, 2:05 a.m., deputies arrested Fabian Morales, 19, 5200 block of East Northcrest Drive, Logansport, on charges of public intoxication, operating a vehicle while intoxicated and resisting law enforcement.

Saturday, 2:20 a.m., deputies arrested Alberto DeLaCruz Jr., 21, 400 block of 13th Street, Logansport, on a charge of public intoxication.

Saturday, 2:35 a.m., deputies arrested Jose E. Granados, 31, 2800 South block of U.S. 35, Logansport, on a charge of public intoxication.

Saturday, 3:25 a.m., state police arrested Clarence Williams, 49, 60 block of Adams Avenue, Peru, on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated and public intoxication.

Saturday, 4:30 a.m., deputies arrested David W. Coleman, 56, Valparaiso, on a charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

Sunday, 2:12 a.m., state police arrested Mark Wibel, 27, 1100 block of North Lincoln Street, Peru, on a charge of possession of a handgun without a permit.

Sunday, 2:15 a.m., state police arrested Charles W. Shane, 35, Oaklawn, on a charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, refusal.

Sunday, 2:35 a.m., state police arrested Kimberly R. White, 18, 700 block of Monroe Avenue, Peru, on a charge of minor consumption of alcohol.
