---- — A Lebanon man was hospitalized Monday evening after he lost control of his car in a construction zone on U.S. 31 north near Smith Road.

The driver, Caleb Bower, 22, told police he was traveling north on U.S. 31 approaching a construction zone when he tried to pass vehicles in the grass and lost control of his 2003 blue Subaru, a Kokomo Police Department accident report stated.

The car flipped over several times in the ditch, injuring Bower, the report stated.

Maj. Brian Seldon said Bower admitted to driving about 70 miles per hour as he was approaching the construction zone. Bower complained of pain in his neck and was taken to St. Joseph Hospital for treatment.

Police warn motorists that speed limits are lower in construction zones.

“The state police and Kokomo police will be watching for vehicles for violating speed limits for the driver’s safety,” Seldon said.

The speed limit in the construction zone on U.S. 31 is posted at 45 miles per hour.

According to state law, fines for speeding in a construction zone can be doubled. Bower was not initially given a citation. Seldon said the decision to issue a citation is up to the discretion of the officer working the case.
