IUK beats Taylor in men’s b-ball

IU Kokomo beat Taylor University 102-96 in overtime in a men’s basketball game Wednesday night in Cougar Gym.

Trequan Spivey led the unbeaten Cougars with a 33-point game. He had 12 of the Cougars’ 16 points in OT.

Spivey made 9 of 15 shots from the field, including 5 of 7 from 3-land. He also connected on 10 of 11 free throw attempts. He also had five rebounds.

Also for IUK (4-0), Akil McClain had 19 points, eight rebounds and four assists, Desean Hampton had 17 points and eight boards and Antoin Clifton had 13 points.

Tipton product Mason Degenkolb had 13 points, five rebounds and three assists for Taylor (0-4).

Purdue routs BSU in women’s hoops

MUNCIE — Purdue’s women’s basketball team rolled past Ball State 80-38 Wednesday night at Worthern Arena. It was the season opener for both teams.

Dominique Oden led a balanced Boiler attack with 17 points. Karissa McLaughlin had 14, Kayana Traylor had 12 and Lyndsey Whilby had 11. McLaughlin and Traylor had four assists apiece, Oden had three assists and Tamara Farquhar had 13 rebounds.

Logansport product Nakeya Penny led BSU with 13 points.

Mac girls capture 1st win of season

BUNKER HILL — Maconaquah’s girls basketball team beat Blackford 66-31 Tuesday night.

The Braves (1-1) enjoyed their highest scoring game since a 71-33 victory over Pioneer on Jan. 29, 2008.

The Braves led 21-12 after the first quarter and 45-23 at halftime.

“Our offensive average last year was 28.8 [points per game] and our defensive average was 56.4. As of now we are averaging 54.5 points per game and 41 points defensively,” Mac coach P.J. Hatcher said. “I say this as a testament to what strides these girls have been able to make together under great leadership from the upperclassmen and my coaching staff along with the hard work and time they have spent to develop their game.”

Freshmen Lilly Maple and Alex Merritt led the Braves with Maple scoring 25 points and Merritt scoring 13. Monica Moore had nine rebounds.
