GOLF: Western, Kokomo finish 3-4 in invitational
By TRIBUNE SPORTS STAFF
Western’s girls golf squad surged to third place and Kokomo took fourth in the 14-team Kokomo Invitational Wednesday at Chippendale G.C.
Hamilton Southeastern won with a miserly 304, followed by DeKalb (325), Western (337), Kokomo (359) and Twin Lakes (361). Northwestern was seventh (381), Tipton eighth (398), Maconaquah ninth (403), Taylor 13th (491) and Eastern 14th (467).
Carlee Cossell led the Western charge with a 79. Maggie Talbert and Courtnee Cossell each carded an 84, Mary Harbaugh shot 90 and Jordyn McGinnis added 97.
“Carlee Cossell has come on and I tell you, hard summer work pays off and she’s a prime example of working in the summer. That’s what’s made her a golfer now,” Western coach Steve Hoppes said. “Maggie, excellent job, and outstanding job by the freshman [Courtnee Cossell]. All in all, a really good team effort.”
Hoppes was glad to have Western be a part of the invitational for the first time and complimented Kokomo and the tournament organizers. It was easy to be in a great mood after wedging his squad in behind strong teams from Hamilton SE and DeKalb.
“We feel like we’re not too bad playing right behind them,” Hoppes said. “Our goal is to keep up the [scores], stay in the 330s, maybe break 330 once in a while, but stay right there and we’ll be extremely happy.”
Kristi Cardwell led Kokomo with an 81, followed by Kylie Kern (89), Tausha Imlay (94), Lindsy Jenkins (95) and Brooke Sawyer (99).
“The girls didn’t play to the best of their ability. They struggled on a few holes — pretty much everybody did,” Kokomo coach Andy Carpenter said. “Tausha brought down her score from last Monday, and Brooke came in with a good score for her first round of the season, a pretty nice score for her.”
Alyssa McClure’s 88 paced Northwestern, followed by Jackie Adams (91), Alexa Richey (99) and Peyton Hite (103).
Logan Jones led Tipton with a 90, followed by Shelbi Boughton (93), Hannah Tina (104) and Rachel Schmitt (111). Jessica Off paced Maconaquah with a 93, followed by Carly Linn (95), Chelsie Carmichael (98) and Alicia Ferre (17).
Amy Lipchik led Taylor at 108. Emily Dill (120), Victoria Saul (127) and Louisa Tranbarger (136) followed. Emily Seagrave led Eastern at 117 followed by Michelle Carpenter (118), Kayla Elkins (126) and Kaylee Kingseed and Carly Wimmer at 136 each.
Hamilton Southeastern’s Brooke Beagle was medalist with a 73 on the par-72 layout.
Caston Invitational
Carroll (429) finished second in the tourney at Logansport G.C. Medalist Megan Garrison carded a 3-over-par 75 to lead the Cougars. Taylor Sproul (98), Malena Zook (109) and Katie Unger (147) rounded out their team score.
