Tigers rule county clash

Taylor tops Hamilton Heights in boys tennis

By TRIBUNE SPORTS STAFF

The Northwestern boys soccer team continued its Howard County domination Wednesday.

Northwestern beat visiting Western 6-1 in a Mid-Indiana Conference match to run its record against local rivals to 3-0. Northwestern beat Kokomo last week and Taylor earlier this week.

John McCormick scored two goals and dished an assist to lead the Purple Tigers past the Panthers. Jimmy Corcoran also scored two goals.

“I was really happy with the kids because we came back from playing in the heat [Tuesday] and our stamina looked really good in the second half,” coach Jim Corcoran said. “John McCormick was the shooting star. He spotted us a 2-0 lead in the first half with two really good shots.”

Elliot Mervis and Nolan Sanders scored the winners’ other goals. Aaron Martinson, Nate Silvey and Peter Caven each chipped in an assist and ’keeper Graham Dennis recorded 10 saves.

The Panthers’ only goal came on a penalty kick by Josh Jackson.

“Our defense really shut Western down,” Jim Corcoran said. “I have to commend the four guys who play back there — Jeremy Robison, Zach Schmidt, Aaron Martinson and Kyle Hinsberger. Those guys are playing really strong.”

Western coach Mike Roe tipped his hat to the Tigers.

“They played a strong game and we definitely didn’t play to our normal level of play,” Roe said. “They were the stronger team, that’s for sure. They were very physical, which is a part of the game. They did a good job imposing their game plan.”

Northwestern (4-2 overall, 2-0 MIC) hosts Peru on Tuesday. Western (3-1-1, 1-1) hosts Maconaquah today.

Tipton 5, Taylor 1

Spencer McQueary scored the Titans’ goal and Seth Stockdell offered 12 saves.

“I thought we played a strong first half. We kind of let it get away in the second half,” Taylor coach Barry Akers said. “We had several chances in the first half to score, but we couldn’t convert. This is the first game where we had a lot more shots on goal, and we gave up the least amount of shots on goal. Overall, we had a good performance.”

Taylor dropped to 0-6.

Oak Hill 6, Maconaquah 0

Maconaquah was shut out, but coach Doug Howlette remained upbeat.

“We had a great game,” Howlette said. “Corey Minard was our defensive player of the game.”

Mark Thompson had 12 saves for the Braves.

Girls soccer

Eastern 4, Muncie Burris 1

Olivia Rees scored three goals and dished an assist to lead the Comets past the visiting Owls. Brittney Anderson backed Rees with a goal and an assist and ’keeper Courtney Jones made nine saves.

Eastern led 2-1 at halftime, then pulled away for the 4-1 win.

“We battled a lot with just being exhausted from [Tuesday],” Eastern coach Kevin Duggins said, referring to an OT battle against Northwestern. “We had some problems from being sore and tired, but the girls were able to correct it at halftime and we came out in the second half and we started playing a little smarter as opposed to trying to force things.”

Rees has 11 goals through five games. She also had a hat trick against Northwestern.

Eastern (3-2) visits Maconaquah next Wednesday.

Taylor 3, Peru 2

The Titans had to come back from a two-goal deficit to claim the MIC win.

“We were down two goals at half, and we were able to comeback with two goals in the second half,” Taylor coach John Piotrowicz said. “We were able to win in the shootout. We controlled the ball most of the game.”

Taylor received second half goals from Avery Gotshall and Amber Doehrman. Gotshall, Doehrman and Katie Long connected in the shootout to win 3-2.

Taylor (2-2, 1-1 MIC) plays at Western Tuesday.

No. 19 Kokomo 173, Northwestern 186

Medalist Kristi Cardwell fired a 1-over 37 to lead the No. 19-ranked Wildkats past the Purple Tigers at Kokomo C.C.

The Red and Blue’s other counting scores came from Kylie Kern (39), Lindsy Jenkins (44) and Mary Kate Balsbaugh (53).

“Kristi and Kylie played really well and Lindsy came in pretty well, about where she’s been playing,” Kokomo coach Andy Carpenter said. “Our scores are starting to head down some. We just have to work on some of our short games and some putting.”

Alyssa McClure and Jackie Adams shot 40 and 41, respectively, to lead Northwestern. Peyton Hight (51) and Alexa Richey (54) offered their third and fourth scores.

Kokomo (4-0) plays Frankfort today.

Maconaquah 193,

Taylor 218, Tipton 235

Medalist Chelsea Carmichael (44), Carly Linn (45) and Jessica Off (46) packed their scores together to lead the Braves to the three-way win at Chippendale G.C.

Amy Lipchik led Taylor with a 47. Victoria Saul (52), Emily Boyd (53) and Lovisa Tranbarger (66) rounded out the Center crew’s score.

“Our girls did a good job, especially our first three. They’re becoming consistent,” Taylor coach George Phares said. “The only thing I was disappointed in was the amount of penalty strokes — we had 12. Two of them I’ve never seen happen to us before, but they happened and they both happened to be two-stroke penalties. That kind of hurt.

“But the girls are starting to get a little better. If we can just inch down and get below that 200 mark for the first time, I think we’ll be OK.”

Logan Jones led Tipton with a 48.

No. 15 Western

wins 4-team meet

Medalist Mary Harbaugh shot a 5-over-par 42 to lead Western to a win in a four-team meet at Peru Municipal G.C. Western (185) topped Peru (199), Southwood (226) and Eastern (227).

Carlee Cossell (46), Maggie Talbert (46), Courtnee Cossell (51) and Ashley Young (51) rounded out the Panthers’ top scores.

Ariel Edwards led Peru with a 48. Jessie Eckerly and Corinne Cutler each fired 49 and Krysten Finicle added a 53.

“It was the first time that we were under 200 as a team for nine holes,” Peru coach Doug Muzzillo said. “It was a good night for us, and it will give us good preparation for the conference coming up.”

Eastern players included Michelle Carpenter (49), Emily Seagrave (52), Kaylee Kingseed (63) and Katie McKinney (63).

Winamac 199, Carroll 213, Cass 218

Carroll’s Megan Garrison fired a 1-under 35 to take individual honors in the three-team meet at Logansport G.C. Garrison scored eagle on the par-five No. 3.

Also for Carroll, Taylor Sproul shot 45. Alisha Layman led Cass with a 45.

No. 2 North Central 5, Kokomo 0

The defending state champions proved too tough for the visiting Wildkats.

“The scores might not indicate it, but I thought we extended them and frustrated them at times and that’s always good to see,” Kokomo coach Shawn Flanary said.

Flanary pointed to the No. 2 doubles team of Drew Simon and Michael Hilton as an example. They dropped a 6-3, 6-0 decision, but had several lengthy points.

Taylor 4, Hamilton Heights 1

The Titans turned in a sharp performance to claim the win at Arcadia. They improved to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the MIC.

The Titans swept the doubles matches. Matt Petty and Reomey Northington took a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 1 and Tim Simmons and Cody Hinton took a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 2.

The Titans’ singles points came from Matt Brankle and Geoff Stimler. Brankle won 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1 and Stimler finished strong for a 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 win at No. 2.

“Overall, this was probably our best showing of the season, up and down the lineup. Even the one match we lost was a three-setter,” Taylor coach Dave Wise said. “For us to be 3-1 right now, with our inexperience, I think we’re certainly playing better as we’re going along. It just gets a lot tougher now — Logansport [today] and then Twin Lakes on Saturday.”

Maconaquah 4, Eastern 1

The Braves improved to 6-2 overall and 2-0 in the MIC following their second straight win of the week.

The Braves’ Sam Dick had the toughest match by winning in three sets (6-0, 3-6, 6-1) at No. 2 singles. Maconaquah swept the singles with Jeremy Graber winning 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 and Austin Hudson winning 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3.

The Braves’ No. 1 doubles team of Christian Fulton and Dakota Harts took a 6-3, 6-2 win.

“I was real pleased with the way the kids played,” MAc coach Dan Fulton said. “Whenever you get a win in the conference that is a good thing.”

Volleyball

Frankfort def. Western

25-18, 25-14, 25-12

The Hot Dogs took it to the Panthers (2-6), winning in three sets.

“Frankfort ran everything on slides,” Western coach Dennis Crum said. “Our kids aren’t used to seeing that yet. We were able to score points against Frankfort on our serve. We had seven aces.”

Sable Staller had five kills and three block assists along with an ace to lead Western. Janel Dewitt added nine digs and two aces.
