NW tops Taylor in golf on sunny Monday

From staff reports

Kokomo — After a long layoff due to the recent rainy conditions, Northwestern and Taylor took to the golf course at Green Acres on a Monday for a nine-hole match. Northwestern was playing just its second match while Taylor finally was making its season debut.

The Purple Tigers (1-1) won the match with a score of 161, and Taylor scored 204.

“Both Taylor coach Justin Palmer and myself  were pleased with our scores,” Northwestern coach Randy Lindgren said. “The grass was thick, but the kids did very well. We are a young team, and to shoot 161 is great for us.”

Northwestern sophomore Blaine Brutus fired an even-par 35 to win medalist honors.

“Brutus shot even par, which is incredible with the lack of practice that most teams have had because of the weather,” Lindgren said.

Drew Gill (39), Nathan Edwards (40) and Austin Miller (47) rounded out the Tigers’ 161.

Jack Lipchik led Taylor with a 47, followed by Gradon McFarland (49), Fred Durham (54) and Clay Dishon (54).

“The Titans played very well for having minimal practice time and no competitive events,” Taylor’s Palmer said. “I think they all got their first-match jitters out of the way and are ready to see what the season will bring them. I was very pleased with their efforts and I truly think that we will be able to compete in some matches this year.”
