BOWMAN: All-Stars kick off Speedweeks

Kokomo Tribune

---- — The third time was finally the charm for the All-Star Circuit of Champions Sprint Car Series as former World of Outlaw champion and current NASCAR driver Dave Blaney picked up the opening-night feature win Sunday at the Bubba Raceway Park in Ocala, Fla.

The series was originally slated to take the track for races on Thursday through Saturday, however heavy rains shortened the three-day show to just a two-day event with the second event slated to take place Monday night. Tuesday’s third day was cancelled to allow those teams wishing to compete in the STP World of Outlaws Series opener on Friday the opportunity to get their equipment race ready.

Blaney piloted his Mohawk Northeast/Global Oil and Gas/Bill Davis Trucking No. 98 to the 30-lap win over second-place Tim Shaffer. Steve Buckwalter, Kerry Madsen and Dale Blaney rounded out the top five.

Heat race wins were claimed by Danny Dietrich, Jac Haudenschild and Wayne Johnson. The Dash to determine the front three rows of the feature event was claimed by Dave Blaney.

Kerry Madsen won the second night of racing Monday for his third career feature. Chad Kemenah was second with Danny Dietrich, David Gravel and Dale Blaney rounding out the top five.

COONS POCKETS $10,000

Jerry Coons Jr., the pilot of the Edison Motorsports/Crume-Evans Insurance/Chalk Chassis No. 10E around the Midwest during the summer months, climbed aboard the open-wheel car he has stated he feels most comfortable in, a midget, and left the Toowomba Speedbowl in Australia $10,000 richer Saturday night.

In Friday night’s preliminary race, Coons was the beneficiary of Michael Pickens’ bad luck. Saturday night the veteran standout left no doubt as he romped to the win and the huge payday that accompanied it.

Pickens chased the Arizona native who now resides in Brownsburg to the checkered flag with Nathan Smee taking third and Alex Bright fourth.

READY TO ROLL

The Volusia Speedway Park in Florida will be the site of the STP World of Outlaws Series’ season opener this weekend.

The stars and cars of the grueling series will be on hand Friday-Sunday, marking Steve Kinser’s last visit to the track as a full-time WoO competitor. After a couple of weeks off, the series gets rolling full tilt in early March with visits to the Las Vegas Dirt Track (March 5-6) then on to Tuscon, Ariz. (March 8). The rest of the month and through the second week of April will find the series tearing up the West Coast dirt tracks.

A complete schedule and ticket information to any of the WoO events can be found at www.worldofoutlaws.com.

USAC SPRINTS

The USAC Amsoil National Sprint Car Series will kick off its 2014 campaign Feb. 20-22 at the Bubba Raceway Park to close out Speed Weeks leading up to the annual running of the Daytona 500.

In the columns to come, there will be information on the different driver/owner combinations as well as some features on several of the drivers who are getting ready to embark on yet another season.

One big-time notable pairing will be featured in my next column.
