Kokomo takes aim at No. 8 Richmond

Kokomo’s boys basketball team will visit Class 4A No. 8-ranked Richmond tonight for a clash of North Central Conference powers.

Richmond (16-2, 5-0 NCC) already has clinched at least a share of the NCC title and can take it outright with a win tonight. Marion (4-1 NCC) needs a victory over Muncie Central tonight and a Richmond loss to grab a share of the title.

Richmond’s first NCC title since sharing the 2002 title has been well earned. The Red Devils finished as runners-up in each of the previous three seasons. Kokomo was the outright champ in ‘11 and ‘13.

The Kats (12-6, 3-2) enter tonight on a hot streak. They have won seven straight and 10 of their last 11. Their lone loss during that stretch came to two-time defending state champion and No. 1-ranked Carmel.

Also tonight, Western and Class 2A No. 9 Cass will clash in both teams’ Mid-Indiana Conference finale. The Panthers (11-5, 5-1) and Kings (14-2, 5-1) are tied for second behind Hamilton Heights (13-3, 4-0).

Heights has league games remaining against Taylor (tonight), Eastern (Wednesday) and Peru (Feb. 28).

In a promising non-conference game, Tipton (11-5) visits Frankfort (11-6).

The following is tonight’s schedule. JV games start at 6 p.m. unless otherwise noted.

• Western at Cass

• Eastern at Northwestern

• Taylor at Hamilton Heights

• Tipton at Frankfort

• Clinton Prairie at Tri-Central

• Carroll at Clinton Central

• Rochester at Peru

• 6:30 — Kokomo at Richmond
