Sports briefs for Tuesday, Feb. 25

Shurn is Crossroads player of the year

The Crossroads League on Monday announced Saint Francis senior guard Skylarr Shurn is its women’s basketball player of the year.

Shurn is a former Kokomo Lady Kat standout. She is averaging 20.1 points, 3.8 assists and 2.2 steals per game for NAIA D-II No. 1-ranked Saint Francis, which will take a 30-0 record into the league’s postseason tournament this week. The Cougars went 18-0 in winning the league’s regular-season title.

Shurn on Monday also picked up Crossroads player of the week honors after leading the Cougars to a pair of wins last week. She is a three-time winner of the weekly award this season and a four-time winner in her career.

No. 1 seed Saint Francis hosts No. 8 seed Spring Arbor at 7 p.m. today in the opening round of the league tournament.

Kokomo boys to host No. 2 BA Thursday

Kokomo High School on Monday added Class 3A No. 2-ranked Bowman Academy to its boys basketball schedule. Kokomo also announced its game against Tipton, postponed last week, has been cancelled and will not be made up.

Kokomo will host Bowman Academy on Thursday and the Kats will celebrate senior night. The JV game will start at 6 p.m. Bowman is a charter school in Gary with a short but rich basketball history. The Eagles won the Class A state title in 2010 and the Class 2A state title in 2013.

• Kokomo’s athletic department will have sectional tickets on sale starting Wednesday. Kokomo is a Class 4A sectional host. The athletic office is open from 7 a.m. until 3 p.m. daily. The all-session tickets are $10.

NW plans retro night for Wednesday’s game

Northwestern High School is planning a retro night for Wednesday when the Tiger basketball team hosts Mississinewa in its home finale. The JV game starts at 6 p.m.
