Western drops 3 at state wrestling duals
WESTFIELD — Western’s wrestling team dropped three matches Saturday at the Team Wrestling State Dual Meet, run by the Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches Association.
Competing in the middle division, Class 2A, Western fell 61-12 to New Prairie in the opening round, lost 45-28 to Lebanon in the second round, and lost 41-38 to Danville in the final round.
Corey Hinkle (182 pounds) and Dante Graham (220) were each 3-0 for Western. Also, Caleb Maddox (120),Peyton Lechner (106) and Dustin Hinkle (145) were each 2-1.
“We’ve had a long sixteen days,” Western coach Chad Shepherd said. “We’ve wrestled a bunch, and we’ve wrestled some really stiff competition. We haven’t performed like I’d expected, but a lot of our underclassmen were awestruck at the whole situation.
“Hopefully, it was a good learning experience for us. Dante and Corey and some of the other guys had pretty decent days, but I think some of our younger guys were deer in the headlights.”
Indiana St. men top Balentine, Evansville
EVANSVILLE — Indiana State’s men’s basketball team defeated Evansville 81-62 Saturday night in a Missouri Valley Conference contest at the Ford Center.
Kokomo product D.J. Balentine led the Purple Aces (7-8, 0-2 MVC) with 23 points and five assists.
Khristian Smith paced the Sycamores (10-3, 2-0) with 27 points and six rebounds.
