Kokomo puts players on all-NCC teams

Kokomo basketball players Tayler Persons, Erik Bowen and Jasmine Love received first-team all-North Central Conference honors.

Joining Persons and Bowen on the 10-player boys first team are James Blackmon Jr. and Alec Turner from Marion, Mike Tillman and Joel Okafor from league champion Richmond, Logansport’s Carter Skaggs, Anderson’s Kenya Wilkerson, Muncie Central’s Tyler Arens and Huntington North’s Kyle Platt. Richmond’s Joe Luce was picked as coach of the year.

The 10-player boys second team includes a pair of Kats — Mykal Cox and Demarius Warren.

Joining Love on the 10-player girls first team are Indiana Miss Basketball Whitney Jennings and Nakeya Penny from league champion Logansport, Da’Sha Boyd, Chelsea Bentley and Samia Carter from Anderson, MacKenzie Taylor and Destiny Perkins from Richmond, Muncie Central’s Jayla Scaife and Marion’s Julia Cardwell. Logan’s Jerry Hoover was picked as coach of the year.

The 10-player girls second team has a pair of Lady Kats — Alanis Jones and Gabrielle Smith.

NW’s Ortmann earns academic all-state

The Indiana Basketball Coaches Association on Thursday named its academic all-state teams. To be eligible for consideration, a player must be a senior and must meet a criteria that include a 3.5 GPA or higher on a 4.0 scale, a class rank in the upper 25 percent of one’s class, and an SAT score of 1,500 or better or an ACT score of 23 or better.

Sixty-nine players (33 boys and 36 girls) earned first-team selections. Another 135 boys and 107 girls received honorable mention.

On the boys side, Northwestern’s Graham Ortmann was a first-team pick. The honorable mention picks included Northwestern’s Keagan Downey, Logan Galbraith and Robert Olsen, Lewis Cass’ Victor DeJesus and Blake Hadley, and Carroll’s Derik Caldwell, Seth Eldridge and Justin Willoughby.
