Kokomo’s D.J. Balentine continued his hot play to lead Evansville past visiting Mercer 89-76 in a men's basketball game Monday night.
Balentine scored 29 points for the third time in as many games this season for the unbeaten Aces. He made 7 of 16 shots from the field, including 1 of 3 from 3-point range, and he connected on 14 of 15 attempts from the free throw line. He has made 35 of 38 charity attempts on the season.
Balentine was at his best in the second half. Mercer led 41-38 at halftime, but the Aces controlled play in the second half with Balentine pouring in 20 points.
Duane Gibson backed Balentine with 23 points for the Aces and Adam Wing added 12.
Balentine previously had 29-point games against Martin Methodist and IUPUI. He is the first Evansville player to open a season with three straight 20-point games since current coach Marty Simmons had five straight 20-point games to open the 1987-88 season.
