KOKOMO 3, LAFayette JEFF 2

The team match came down to the outcome of the No. 2 doubles match, where Kokomo’s Joey Hurlocker and Blake Brookshire won 7-6 (4), 2-6, 6-4 to seal the victory for the road Kats (5-8).

Earlier, Kokomo No. 1 singles player Craig Simon won 6-1, 6-3 and No. 2 player Bryce York won 6-4, 6-4.

“It was an exciting night,” Kokomo coach Shawn Flanary said. “Craig Simon kind of took care of business and was quick, and Bryce had a really tight one there. In fact his opponent, in both sets, came back from 5-2 down to make things tight and Bryce was able to hold his composure and close that out. The [Jeff] kid fought off several match points.

“It ended up being 2-2 and came down to 2 doubles. We won the first set in a tiebreaker,” Flanary said. He noted that when Jeff won the second set 6-2 “you thought it might favor the other team. Our guys really settled down and adjusted and used their heads and had some great strategical changes in the third set to close it out.”
