Prep roundup, Oct. 8

NW volleyball sweeps Taylor.

Northwestern’s boys soccer squad took care of business against Taylor in Monday’s Class A Northwestern Sectional opener. The Purple Tigers jumped to a 5-0 halftime lead and went on for a 7-0 win.

Robert Olsen scored a hat trick to lead the offensive party. Jacob Wagner scored two goals, Blaine Brutus had a goal and three assists and Garrett Hite had a goal.

Also for Northwestern (12-4-1), Spencer Lubben had two assists and Parker Fessenden and Trajan Cunningham had an assist apiece.

“It was a really good team performance,” NW coach Jim Wagner said. “The guys came out really focused, with a lot of energy. We were able to get quite a few guys in the game and we had no letdown with the intensity. That was good to see.”

Taylor ‘keeper Hunter Stephens had 21 saves.

The sectional resumes today with Tipton taking on Tri-Central in a semifinal matchup. Northwestern advances to play Rossville in a semifinal matchup Wednesday.

Hannah Ballard served 16 points (five aces) and floored 14 kills to lead the Purple Tigers’ sweep of the Titans.

Also for Northwestern, Kristin Ireland had 14 points (six aces), 13 digs and 39 assists and Sydney Zeck and Alexis Brown combined for seven kills. Syndey Zeck also had 11 assists.

Taylor was led by Hannah Mullinax, Valary Farmer and Rachel Hafley. They had seven points each.

“We are a banged-up team right now. [Monday] we lost one of our setters to injury in warm-up. Last week it was our strong hitter,” Taylor coach Denise Leicht said. “We are getting people minutes on the court but at this time of the season with [Howard] County and sectionals coming up, a team wants to be at full strength and we just are not. Kayla Renbarger and Allison Shephard both came in [Monday] and played well. Neither one of them has much varsity time setting but both came in and gave it their best shot. We have to get healthy before Saturday.
