Saint Francis’ Shurn wins league award
The Crossroads League on Monday named Saint Francis senior Skylarr Shurn its women’s basketball player of the week.
Shurn, a Kokomo Lady Kat product, helped the NAIA Division II No. 4-ranked Cougars open the season 2-0. She averaged 23 points, 6 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2 steals per game. The 5-foot-7 guard scored a career-high 28 points in a 98-91 victory over NAIA Division I No. 11 Shawnee State.
Shurn is a two-time player of the week, having won the award once last season.
NCC all-academic team includes 11 Kats
Kokomo High School had 11 fall athletes earn spots on the North Central Conference’s all-academic team.
Those Kat athletes are Jeremy Breedlove (cross country), Benjamin Huff (XC and football), Fletcher Miller (football), Jennifer Oldaker (golf), Katy Volikas (golf), Aaron Dea (soccer), Karen McIlrath (soccer), Anh Pham (soccer), Craig Simon (tennis), Alanis Jones (volleyball) and Schuyla Sharp (volleyball).
IU, Purdue, BSU score exhibition wins
Indiana, Purdue and Ball State all posted victories over lower-division opponents in men’s basketball exhibition games Monday night.
Indiana beat D-II school Hillsdale College of Michigan 79-39 at Assembly Hall. The Hoosiers fell behind 13-2 before taking control of the game. Kevin “Yogi” Ferrell led a balanced IU attack with 14 points. Will Sheehey had 12 before leaving the game in the second half with an injury. Freshmen Troy Williams and Stanford Robinson added nine points each and classmate Noah Vonleh added eight points and nine rebounds.
IU opens its regular-season schedule Friday against Chicago State.
Purdue beat D-II school Wayne State of Nebraska 91-58 at Mackey Arena. Errick Peck led the Boilers with a 16-point, six-rebound performance. Rapheal Davis had 13 points, Terone Johnson and Bryson Scott had 10 apiece, Ronnie Johnson had nine points and six assists and Kendall Stephens hit three 3-pointers for nine points. Scott and Stephens are freshmen.
Purdue opens its regular-season schedule Friday against Northern Kentucky.
Ball State rallied from 17 down to beat NAIA school Marian 62-59 at Muncie. Freshman guard Zavier Turner led BSU with 18 points and Majok Majok had a double-double of 12 points and 13 rebounds. Aaron Evans led Marian with 17 points.
The Cardinals begin their regular season Saturday at Indiana State.
Carter-Williams, Love win NBA awards
Philadelphia rookie Michael Carter-Williams has joined Shaquille O’Neal as the only NBA players to win a Player of the Week award to open a career.
Carter-Williams won the Eastern Conference honor after averaging 20.7 points and 9.0 assists in a surprising 3-0 week that included victories over Miami and Chicago. The No. 11 pick in the draft had nine steals in the 76ers’ season-opening victory over the Heat, the most ever in an NBA debut.
O’Neal won the award in 1992 while playing for Orlando.
Kevin Love won the Western Conference award after leading Minnesota to a 3-0 week and averaging an NBA-best 29.7 points.
Philadelphia and Minnesota saw their hot starts end Monday night. Golden State thumped the 76ers 110-90, and Cleveland beat Minnesota 93-92.
Former Sixer Andre Iguodala made a career-high seven 3-pointers and scored 32 points and Stephen Curry had 18 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds in Golden State’s win.
