Girls BB: No. 10 Oak Hill turns back Taylor’s upset bid

Western, Northwestern post opening victories in girls swimming

From staff reports

— Taylor gave Class 2A No. 10-ranked Oak Hill a battle before the Golden Eagles emerged with a 52-43 win in a girls basketball contest Tuesday night at Center Court.

Taylor (1-1) trailed just 44-41 after three quarters, but managed just two points in the final quarter.

“We came out in the second half and we were just on fire. We were down five [at halftime] and I think we scored the first 10 points of the third quarter,” Taylor coach Dennis Bentzler said. “We just ran out of gas. [Post player] Siera Daniel got in foul trouble and that just hurts us. That is two games in row. We have to keep her on the floor. We really struggled down the stretch. But, I am extremely proud of the kids. This was a game I wasn’t sure we could compete in from a physical standpoint, but our kids battled.”

Lauran Reece led the Titans with 13 points. Cami Hansen followed with nine points. Reece and Hansen both had four rebounds. Brie Boehler chipped in seven points and Daniel had six.

“The kids laid it all on the line,” Bentzler said. “I couldn’t be prouder of the effort. There were two or three points of the game where we had five freshmen on the floor. I like these kids, I like the way they play. We’re going to be knocking on the door a lot of times this year — maybe more than what I thought. We’re excited.”

Rene Spaulding powered Oak Hill (2-0) with a game-high 24 points.
