Bethany Neeley helps IU win meet

BLOOMINGTON — Eastern High School product Bethany Neeley helped the Indiana women’s cross country team win the Big State race in the Indiana Intercollegiate meet on Friday evening.

The Hoosiers topped the eight-team field with a score of 21. Purdue (55), IUPUI (108), IPFW (135), Indiana State (136), Evansville (159), Butler (161) and Ball State (193) rounded out the standings.

Neeley, an IU freshman, covered the 5K course in 18:08.11. She was fourth overall, and IU’s third finisher.

In the Little State women’s race, Indianapolis (44) topped DePauw (56) for the top spot in the 18-team field. IU Kokomo finished 18th. Alisha Hobbs and Amy McCauley led IUK. Hobbs was 85th in a time of 23:06.4 and McCauley was 87th in 23:19.99. There were 120 runners in the field

On the men’s side, Indiana won the Big State race and Wabash won the Little State race.

IU Kokomo was 17th out of 19 teams in the Little State race. Javier Vasquez led the Cougars with a 71st-place finish. He covered the course in 29:21.45. Teammates Cody Phelps (30:31.37) and Jon Flory (30:40.37) were 92nd and 94th, respectively. There were 131 runners in the race.

Sports Hall of Fame tickets on sale

The Howard County Sports Hall of Fame has tickets are on sale for its 2013 induction banquet, which is set for Oct. 26 at the Ivy Tech Kokomo Event and Conference Center. Social hour will begin at 5 p.m. with dinner following at 6 p.m.

Tickets are limited. They are $25 each, or an entire table of eight can be reserved for $200. Tickets are only available by calling Ron Barsh at 765-453-4739.

The 2013 induction class has Ty Calloway, Art Hammond, Dave Kitchell, Pat Kubly, Carroll Odom, Kylee (Wells) Retrum and James “Tod” Sloan.
