Poppas takes gold, bronze in Senior Olympics

CLEVELAND — Kokomo native Tom Poppas took a gold medal and a bronze medal while competing in racquetball at the National Senior Games this week.

In singles action at the 75-and-over age level, Poppas went 5-0 in preliminary play to reach the final eight. In the round of eight he beat Dave Turner of Nashville, Tenn., 11-8, 11-0 to reach the semifinal round. He lost in the semi 15-2, 15-4 to eventual champion Carl Rydberg of San Diego. Poppas finished the competition fourth and took a bronze medal along with the third-place finisher.

In 75-and-over doubles, Poppas teamed with Georgia’s Richard Edwards to take the gold medal. The doubles consisted of a round-robin format with the Poppas-Edwards tandem winning all four of their matches to stand atop the podium.

Eastern sets practice, selling season passes

GREENTOWN — Eastern has scheduled its fall practice times and also announced the sale of season passes. First practice times are as follows. Girls golf begins today, and all other sports start practicing on Monday.

Girls golf: 8:30 a.m. today at the American Legion.

Football: 3-9:30 p.m. Monday at the football field.

Boys soccer: 8-10 a.m. Monday at the soccer field.

Girls soccer: 8-10 a.m. Monday at the soccer field.

Cross country: 7-9 a.m. Monday at the high school.

Boys tennis: 9-11 a.m. Monday at the tennis courts.

Volleyball: 8-10 a.m. Monday.

• Eastern has announced information for the sale of all-season passes.

The adult season pass costs $70. A student season pass costs $15. A family pass (for families of four or more) costs $165. And a football-only pass is $20.

Passes will go on sale at the athletic office beginning Monday from 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m. daily.

Kokomo schedules first practice times

Kokomo High School has announced its first practice times for the upcoming season. The times are as follows. Golf begins practice today, with all other sports starting on Monday.
