---- — Poppas takes gold, bronze in Senior Olympics

CLEVELAND — Kokomo native Tom Poppas took a gold medal and a bronze medal while competing in racquetball at the National Senior Games this week.

In singles action at the 75-and-over age level, Poppas went 5-0 in preliminary play to reach the final eight. In the round of eight he beat Dave Turner of Nashville, Tenn., 11-8, 11-0 to reach the semifinal round. He lost in the semi 15-2, 15-4 to eventual champion Carl Rydberg of San Diego. Poppas finished the competition fourth and took a bronze medal along with the third-place finisher.

In 75-and-over doubles, Poppas teamed with Georgia’s Richard Edwards to take the gold medal. The doubles consisted of a round-robin format with the Poppas-Edwards tandem winning all four of their matches to stand atop the podium.

Eastern sets practice, selling season passes

GREENTOWN — Eastern has scheduled its fall practice times and also announced the sale of season passes. First practice times are as follows. Girls golf begins today, and all other sports start practicing on Monday.

Girls golf: 8:30 a.m. today at the American Legion.

Football: 3-9:30 p.m. Monday at the football field.

Boys soccer: 8-10 a.m. Monday at the soccer field.

Girls soccer: 8-10 a.m. Monday at the soccer field.

Cross country: 7-9 a.m. Monday at the high school.

Boys tennis: 9-11 a.m. Monday at the tennis courts.

Volleyball: 8-10 a.m. Monday.

• Eastern has announced information for the sale of all-season passes.

The adult season pass costs $70. A student season pass costs $15. A family pass (for families of four or more) costs $165. And a football-only pass is $20.

Passes will go on sale at the athletic office beginning Monday from 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m. daily.

Kokomo schedules first practice times

Kokomo High School has announced its first practice times for the upcoming season. The times are as follows. Golf begins practice today, with all other sports starting on Monday.

Girls golf: 9 a.m. today at the Kokomo Country Club.

Boys cross country: 8 a.m. Monday at the New Gym foyer.

Girls cross country: 3 p.m. Monday at the track.

Football: 8 a.m. Monday at the football field.

Boys soccer: 3:30 p.m. Monday at the soccer fields.

Girls soccer: 9 a.m. Monday at the soccer fields.

Boys tennis: 8 a.m. Monday at the tennis courts.

Volleyball: 10 a.m. Monday at the old and new gyms.

All athletes must have a completed IHSAA physical form on file at the KHS office to practice. Those with questions should call the Kokomo athletic office at 765-455-8053.

Taylor sets fall sports’ first practice dates

Taylor High School Thursday announced its opening dates for fall sports’ practices. Girls golf practice starts Friday, with all others beginning early next week. Times are as follows:

Girls golf: Friday, 1 p.m. at Chippendale G.C.

Cross Country: Monday, 8:30 a.m. at picnic table outside Intermediate school.

Football: Monday, 3 p.m. at high school entrance 19 for IMPACT testing followed by practice.

Boys soccer: Monday, 3 p.m., at practice soccer field.

Girls soccer: Monday, 8:30 a.m. at practice soccer field.

Boys tennis: Monday, 9 a.m. at THS tennis courts.

Volleyball: Monday, 9 a.m., in high school gym.

HCA’s White places at Age Group State

INDIANAPOLIS — Howard County Aquatics swimmer Max White scored a 16th-place finish in the 50-meter butterfly in the boys’ 11-12 age group this past weekend at the Age Group State meet at the IU Natatorium.
