The Frys.com Open is the season opener in the new PGA Tour schedule, which starts in October instead of January for the first time in history. Instead of a Fall Series event where players mainly were trying to make money to keep their cards, the tournament offered all the perks of any other regular PGA Tour event.
Mikel, Earlywine hit holes in one
A pair of golfers recorded holes in one Sunday on local courses.
Tanya Mikel scored her first hole in one on Chippendale Golf Club’s Championship 18. Tanya used her driver to ace No. 5, which plays 151 yards. Becky D’amico witnessed the shot.
Earlywine’s ace came during the Hog Roast Golf Tourney at American Legion G.C. He used an 8-iron to ace No. 14, which plays 130 yards. Earlywine’s team, which also included Scott Benedict, Chris Thompson, MaryKate Balsbaugh and Jerry Leach, won the tournament.
Tigers win opener vs. Red Sox in ALCS
BOSTON (AP) — Anibal Sanchez and four Detroit Tigers relievers came within two outs of the first combined no-hitter in postseason history, striking out 17 to beat the Boston Red Sox 1-0 Saturday night in the AL championship series opener.
Boston was hitless until Daniel Nava singled off Joaquin Benoit with one out in the ninth.
Stephen Drew followed Nava and flied out to right and, with the potential tying run on second, Xander Bogaerts hit a game-ending popout to shortstop.
Game 2 was Sunday night. It finished too late for a report in today’s Tribune.
