Purdue turns back UIndy in exhibition
WEST LAFAYETTE — Purdue beat the University of Indianapolis 80-73 in a men’s basketball exhibition game Wednesday night at Mackey Arena.
Terone Johnson led a balanced Boiler attack with 17 points. Rapheal Davis followed with 13, freshmen Bryson Scott and Kendall Stephens had 11 apiece and Jay Simpson had 10. Stephens hit three 3-pointers.
The Division-II Greyhounds also showed good balance. Joe Lawson scored 17 points and Tyrae Robinson and Reece Cheatham had 15 apiece.
The Greyhounds shot better from the field than the Boilers (45 percent to 39 percent), but the Boilers had advantages in free throws made (24-14) and attempted (35-26).
Hansen records ace at Country Club
Brandon Hansen hit a hole in one Tuesday at the Kokomo Country Club. He used a driver to ace No. 10, which plays 138 yards. Derrick Hansen witnessed the shot.
New Zealand ties U.S. in women’s soccer
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Hannah Wilkinson, twice denied on near goals, chipped in a 15-yard shot in the 87th minute to allow New Zealand to forge a 1-1 draw with the United States in a women’s soccer friendly Wednesday night at Crew Stadium.
Syndey Leroux scored in the 42nd minute for the Americans.
It stayed 1-0 until Wilkinson swooped in from the right side, sidestepped a defender and beat goalie Hope Solo. Solo had three saves for the Americans,12-0-3 this year.
