Kokomo golfers win at Battle Ground

Taylor’s baseball team used a late rally to beat visiting Delta 8-3 Monday night at George Phares Field.

Tied 1-all through four innings, the teams traded blows in the fifth. The Eagles scored two runs in the top of the fifth for a 3-1 advantage. The Titans answered with four runs in the bottom of the frame for a 5-3 lead. No. 9 hitter Jonathan Mahoney sparked the rally with a leadoff single and Cole Schroeder put Taylor in the lead with a two-run single.

The Titans tacked on three insurance runs in the sixth.

“It was a solid win,” Taylor coach Brent Owens. “Delta has a solid team. They play a tough schedule. It was a 3-1 ballgame going into the [bottom of the] fifth inning and I felt like our kids mentally stayed in it even though we were down. Finally, in the bottom of the fifth, we exploded and took the lead.

“The whole attitude [Monday] was what you need to have a good team. Our attitude was solid. I’m just really happy for the kids.”

Taylor (7-8) had 10 hits. Nick Barnett led the way with a 4-for-4 performance that included two doubles. He drove in three runs. Jordan Lazaro put the Titans on the board with an RBI double in the fourth inning and Tyler Gatlin had an RBI single in the sixth.

“We’re starting to swing the bats again,” Owens said. “We’re playing great defense — we’re fielding almost .950 as a team. Our pitching staff is mostly young. But if we can keep playing good defense and score runs, I think we’re going to have a good season.”

Jordon Lazaro earned the win. He started and worked 5 2/3 innings. He allowed three runs on eight hits. He struck out five and walked two. Austin Douglas picked up the save following 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.

It was easy to tell as a red rash covered her arms and her face was painfully swollen. She is one of those people who loves being outdoors yet highly allergic to the common plant. Sometimes I believe she can get the rash by simply looking at the noxious weed.
