Barnes sets Taylor's career hits record

Kokomo — Taylor baseball standout Logan Barnes made his final game at George Phares Field one to remember.

Barnes pitched four solid innings to lead Taylor past Monroe Central 9-3 Tuesday. In addition, he went 2 for 3 at the plate, pushing his career hits total to a school-record 142.

Barnes led off the bottom of the first with a single to left for his 141st career hit, tying Brandon Boles and Brad Collins for the record. Boles and Collins played on Taylor’s 2000 Class 2A state championship team.

The Danville Area Community College recruit broke the record in the fifth when he beat out an infield hit to shortstop.

“Coming out at the start of the game, the whole team was fired up. The whole team realized history was going to be made. When Logan stepped up and on the first pitch, hit a hard ball into left field, the bench was really into it,” Taylor coach Brent Owens said.

“Two positive things came out of [Tuesday]: It was a great team win, and Logan got the record taken care of before we got into sectional play and I’m thankful for both.”

Barnes is enjoying an all-state-caliber season. He is batting a sizzling .494 with six homers and 28 RBI in 24 games. In addition, he owns a 6-2 pitching record.

He has been a consistent presence in the Titans’ lineup throughout his career. He had 20 hits as a freshman, 44 as a sophomore when the Titans reached the Class 2A final four and 39 as a junior. He has 39 this year.

“From a historian’s standpoint, someone who has known Taylor baseball since the 1970s, I truly believe that Logan is one of the top 5-10 players to come out of Taylor,” said Owens, who is a former Taylor player. “He has just had an amazing career.”

Also for Taylor in Tuesday’s game, Tyler Gatlin socked a two-run homer, Trevor Marler smacked two doubles and drove in three runs, Drew Hansen had two singles and two RBI, and Cole Schroeder had two singles.

Barnes pitched four innings and allowed two runs and six hits. He struck out three and walked none. Schroeder pitched two innings and Nick Hoover worked the final inning.

Taylor (13-11) plays Tipton in the Class 2A Eastern Sectional bye game Monday.
