Sixers win twoin 4th of July tourney

PLYMOUTH — Kokomo Post 6 took two wins Friday in the Fourth of July Patriot Tournament. Playing at Ancilla College, the Sixers opened with a 4-3 victory over Valparaiso Post 94. The teams were tied at 3-all through five innings before Post 6 plated the winner in the bottom of the sixth.

Jake McMain knocked in the winning run with a single to score Cody Shipley. Shipley then took care of business on the mound, finishing the game for the victory. The relief pitcher had three strikeouts and gave up no walks or hits in two shutout frames. Eli Grimes added two singles for the Sixer offense.

“First game was just a real tight game,” Kokomo coach Don Andrews said. “We played very well, we hit the ball well and like always we played good defense. We pitched well also.”

Kokomo won 6-2 over Bristol Post 143 to close pool play. Starting pitcher Conner Milligan had a strong outing. He had five strikeouts, three walks, four hits and one run (earned) in a six-inning stint.

Milligan and Logan Barnes provided the bulk of the offense. Each had a two-run double and a single. The Sixers built a 6-0 lead through the top half of the sixth before Bristol finally got on the board.

“In the second game, again, just good overall play,” Andrews said. “We pounded out 10 hits, which is good with wooden bats, and Conner just pitched an amazing game, and we did not commit an error. Just good baseball all around. Hope to keep it up for the rest of the weekend.”

Kokomo (12-9) plays Mishawaka Post 161 at 2 p.m. today at Plymouth High School’s Bill Nixon Field. The loser plays a consolation game later today. The winner advances to Sunday’s action.
