NW wins 3-team golf meet

Kokomo boys tennis, NW girls soccer teams drop season openers.

Northwestern’s girls golf team posted a score of 169 to top Western (183) and Frankfort (incomplete) in a three-team match on Monday at the Purple Tigers’ home course, Green Acres G.C.

Northwestern’s Ashton Martin carded a 3-over 39 to win medalist honors.

Olivia McClure (43), Alexis Hungate (43) and Karly Shaw (44) rounded out the Tigers’ top four scores. Lauren Miller (47) led the JV Tigers.

“I thought the scores were consistent with what we’ve been shooting. Ashton had a great round with 39,” Northwestern skipper Randy Lindgren said. “[Western] is one of the teams we’ll meet in the sectional on their home course so this was a good match for Northwestern.”

Minka Gill led the Panthers with a 43, Natalie Newlin followed with a 45, Shelby Schave shot a 46 and Anna Austin shot a 49.

Marion 174, Kokomo 201

Marion’s Kayla Adamson carded an even-par 35 to win individual honors and lead her squad to the win at the Kokomo Country Club.

AnneMarie Balsbaugh led the Kats with a 45. Jenny Oldaker (47), Katy Volikas (52) and Lucy Mavrick (57) followed for the Red and Blue.

BOYS TENNIS

Plymouth 5, Kokomo 0

The Wildkats dropped their season opener on the road.

“Plymouth has a solid program,” Kokomo coach Shawn Flanary said. “We’re a little inexperienced with six out of seven [players] new to the varsity lineup. But I think our guys fought and had great attitudes on the court. I think if we continue to do the right things, we’re going to get a lot better and that’s what we need to do. We’ll just try to learn from this and make some improvements.”

GIRLS SOCCER

West Lafayette 10, NW 0

Perennial power West Lafayette blanked visiting Northwestern in the Tigers’ season opener.

The 2012 regional champion Red Devils jumped to a 5-0 lead in the first half, then added five more goals in the second half — but Northwestern coach Samantha Elkins noted her team showed her something in the loss.
