Kokomo netters strong in shut out of Northwestern

Prep roundup

Kokomo’s girls tennis team blanked Northwestern 5-0 Thursday in a convincing performance following a two-day weather layoff.

Morgan Mohr won the No. 1 singles match 6-1, 6-2 for the Wildkats, who improved to 2-1 on the season. Amanda Tran won the No. 2 match 6-3, 6-2. Rachel Stout won the No. 3 match in three sets 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 over Kady Whitehead. Brooke Grider and Stephanie Kailey won the No. 1 doubles match 6-4, 6-1. And AnneMarie Balsbaugh and Riley Vyain won the No. 2 doubles match 7-5, 6-1.

“It was a great match for us,” said Kokomo assistant Jason Burns, who subbed in for head coach Natalie Rainey. “Morgan Mohr did a great job at No. 1 singles. That was her best match of the season. She played really strong. Our No. 2 and both our doubles teams, they were down two or three games in the first set and all three of them kind of regained their footing and came back and won the first set, and won the second set. Northwestern is a county rival, sectional opponent and they came out and were really taking it to us, and our girls had to respond to that.

“I’m proud of Rachel Stout at No. 3 singles. She wasn’t feeling very well,” Burns said, noting he wasn’t sure Stout would be able to finish the match due to illness. “She hung in there and got to feeling better and was able to put that away after everyone else was off the court.”
